Abacus Fisheries are looking for fit energetic staff who have commercial fishing experience. This is a permanent position for the right person.
We are offering 4 full time fishermen/deck hand positions for our crab fishing vessels leaving from Carnarvon, 6701, Western Australia.
The role will commence on Monday 6TH November 2023, and fishing season ends on 3rd August 2024.
The role’s duties include:
- Making new pots and repairing existing gear before we commence fishing in November 2022.
- Fishing activities involve pulling and emptying the pots, baiting, resetting the pots and grading Blue Swimmer crab and general deck and fishing gear work which includes net repair.
- Assisting with vessel maintenance on annual vessel refit.
Successful applicants will be:
- Very physically fit.
- Alert and aware of their surroundings.
- Able to follow directions and use common sense
- Willing and able to pass random drug and alcohol testing as a requirement of the role.
Experience has proven that is job is not for the faint hearted. It takes between 7 to 14 days to train a new deck hand, so only apply if you are up for a huge challenge and looking for an ongoing opportunity.
While experience in crab fishing is not essential, we request that applicants with commercial fishing experience detail their experience and skills.
Fishing is carried out 6 days per week, but you will get rostered days off.
On a normal day, the fishing time per day is between 6 and 7 hours. Plus, the travelling time is subject to how far from port the crab pots are set. All the fishing is in Shark Bay is out of the port of Carnarvon.
Boats leave port between 2am and 4am each morning and return to port daily.
This role is award free and pays a weekly wage of $812.60 (which updates in line with the National Minimum Award), plus end of season bonus for those who work the whole season and 8 weeks paid annual leave.
